I had the opportunity to speak with Jean Burgess and Joshua Green about their new book, called YouTube: Online Video and Participatory Culture. They completed a large-scale content survey of certain categories on YouTube that might be seen as “the most popular.” Here, they talk a bit about what they found and whether or not prior assumptions that have been reported about YouTube’s content lined up to the videos they examined in their sample.

Things didn’t go as I had planned that day. I had a topic all set to go. But when I got to the meet up I felt kind of mellow and had a more experiential time, rather than trying to accumulate a lot of interviews. I guess I wanted to spend time with people I have been meeting at the gatherings, and that is what the footage reflects. I’m always amazed at what the footage “tells you.”

Video Reciprocity

Reciprocity is defined as a sense of mutual obligation people may feel toward each other. One way that anthropologists try to understand different social relationships is to examine the kinds of reciprocity that individuals or members of social groups have toward one another. Among video bloggers, do you feel a sense of reciprocity to watch and comment on their videos? Why or why not?

A Video Summit

What Do You Owe Your Subscribers?

What Defines a Community?

Scholars have argued for a long time about whether online groups can be considered communities. Of course, there are many different types of online groups, some of whom consider themselves a community and some who do not. Some people attribute Internet-based interaction to breaking up local communites. But as Wellman (1996) points out, for many people in the United States, people’s strongest social ties have not been local for quite some time. He argues that industrial forces have been changing the composition of our social networks over the course of the last hundred years–long before the Internet appeared on the scene.

In conducting online research among video sharing site participants, I’ve noticed that YouTube is vast with people relating positive and negative experiences they have had on the site. But what is particularly interesting to me is that in discussing whether or not YouTube feels like a community to them, the interviews revealed what the individuals defined as the characteristics of community. To me this is an important part of the video. Many different defintions of community are mentioned in this video both in text and images. Can you identify them? Which definitions seem most persuasive to you?

YouTube Your Way

I talked with a number of people at the big 777 meet up in NYC. It was referred to as “777″ because it took place on July 7, 2007. It was an amazing event and I enjoyed talking to people about things they liked about YouTube and suggestions they had to improve the dialogue between participants and YouTube. Many of the issues are not easy to find solutions to, but I enjoy hearing people’s opinions on these issues. Do you find yourself agreeing or disagreeing with the opinions expressed in the video?
