In light of our discussion on place at Pixelodeon recently, I thought I would put up a video that explores similar themes. We talked at the screening about how we often don’t think of things like airports or bus stations as places but rather as things that take us from one place to another. Yet our bodies and behavior are regulated in certain ways in these places. Similarly, Highway 5 is often thought of as a means to an end. A way to travel between northern and southern California. But what I hoped to show in this video is that it is in and of itself a place that evokes emotions, memories, nostalgia, and regulation of our bodies in ways that, in a nutshell, make it a place. Do you think of Highway 5 as a place? Why or why not? Can you think of something else that people consider a means to an end, but you have experienced as a place?
