A Video Summit

This is a video blog I made to highlight some important themes that emerged from the DIY 24/7 video summit held at USC. The event spanned three days and included screenings of many different genres, academic panels, and hands-on workshops. I include some conversations I had with a few of the curators and participants. For more information see: http://www.video24-7.org/
I encourage people to check out the full videos, including the Open Youth Networks project on YouTube that Mindy Faber is heading up. See: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lfJd0Q8HjPw

If you are not familiar with vidding (the subject of the second interview with Professor Coppa) see: http://mediacommons.futureofthebook.org/videos/2008/01/28/pressure-a-metavid-by-the-california-crew/

The Digital Dojo

The Digital Dojo is a very interesting place in which video blogging events are held to help people understand the many aspects of making and distributing video. One I attended was one of the “Super Happy Vlog House” events, held at various places in the United States. Are there SHVH events elsewhere in the world? I always enjoy going and learning about technical aspects of video making. I think the Dojo is great and Markus and Alicia are always so warm and welcoming to video bloggers of all levels. It is a beautiful place that has a peaceful atmosphere.

Video Blogging and Activism

I spoke with Ryanne Hodson about how video blogging can be a form of activism. A particular video blog can certainly raise awareness about specific issues. But Ryanne also talked about how teaching others to video blog is also a form of activism in that it widens the number of voices who can bring their own perspectives to an issue. She talked about how video blogging can be considered a basic form of media literacy. Some people find it problematic to equate certain skills such as making videos with basic abilities such as literacy. What do you think?
