The Digital Dojo

The Digital Dojo is a very interesting place in which video blogging events are held to help people understand the many aspects of making and distributing video. One I attended was one of the “Super Happy Vlog House” events, held at various places in the United States. Are there SHVH events elsewhere in the world? I always enjoy going and learning about technical aspects of video making. I think the Dojo is great and Markus and Alicia are always so warm and welcoming to video bloggers of all levels. It is a beautiful place that has a peaceful atmosphere.

A Digital Dissertation

There are three types of digital dissertation. The first is one in which a dissertation written for paper distribution is stored digitally. The second refers to a dissertation that is mostly paper-based but has a supplemental media component such as a related video or other media. Yet even in this example, the dissertation is said to stand alone, without the supplemental component. Professor Kuhn wrote a third type of dissertation, one that was “born digital.” This means that it is media rich and integrates media with text into a cohesive whole. No component can stand on its own, since the media and text are used together to convey particular analyses and conclusions. Village of the Large Fountain

This is a replica of a fountain which was found in a place called the Village of the Large Fountain in Pompei. The replica is located at the Getty Villa near Malibu. It is easy to take water for granted, but it is important to see what a fountain means in the context of the village. Enjoy!

Six Textures from a Chair

When I first got a cell phone with a video camera, I tried it out. I realized you can observe a lot of different things sitting in one vantage point. I called this video six “textures” while thinking about how texture often refers to how things feel. Yet we cannot feel things in a video. How can we show what things “feel” like? Also, texture can mean other things, artistically, besides how things feel. It can refer to an “identifying quality or character…of a piece of art” (The Free Online Dictionary).

Shaking Man

Art always poses so many questions. What does it mean to be a businessman in motion? Why does he shake? What is Terry Allen trying to tell us? For more information about Terry Allen see: http://www.lalouver.com/html/allen_bio_comm.html

Storms, Arks, and Rainbows

I found the Noah’s Ark Exhibit at the Skirball Center in Los Angeles to be very interesting. I think it is great to re-purpose things and make such beautiful art and raise awareness about some important ideas.

Twilight at the Monument

On a recent trip to D.C. I thought I would take a Lumiere video of the White House. I didn’t find my footage to be as interesting as my footage of the Washington Monument, so I put that up instead. This is not a Lumiere video, but it was Lumiere-inspired in that I set up a tripod and just filmed what I could see. I always notice so much using this method and often discover things, such as the study of contrasts in this video, by using Lumiere-inspired rules for making videos.
